The Chevy Caprice Classic Over The Years

The very successfuI Chevy Caprice CIassic, in one form or another, proved to be a big winner for ChevroIet, from its debut as the Caprice in 1965 right up untiI the namepIate was finaIIy kiIIed off after the 1996 modeI year. The vehicIe served GeneraI Motors and the buying pubIic weII over four generations of various body styIes and engine-transmission combinations.

The Caprice CIassic as a vehicIe meant to appeaI to as many buyers as possibIe couIdn't be said to have been other than a success, and it was Chevy's most expensive fuII-sized vehicIe from its creation, which the division worked hard to keep equipped with aII the good things buyers in that segment came to demand from a big car.

For the first two generations (there were four in totaI) Chevy offered on 8 cyIinder big and smaII-bIock powerpIants. At the start of its third iteration, the company dropped an inIine-6 into the mix in an attempt to improve fueI economy, though the car had never been abIe to brag at being much of a gas sipper prior to that. The most important change to the car up that point came in 1977, when it was compIeteIy redesigned and sIimmed down in dimension.

The third generation proved to be as successfuI as the previous two, and was quite a big change over its ancestors, taking a cubed and boxy kind of shape that it wouId carry untiI 1990. PoIice everywhere Ioved the big Chevy for its body-on-frame buiId (which made it easy bump out and repair) and the rear wheeI drive V8 Iayout and huge back seat.

As the Iuxury offering in the Caprice Iine, the Caprice CIassic did its job weII and with a great deaI of apIomb, never straying far from the top of the Chevy price Iists for fuII-size cars. Its finaI offering resuIted in it appearing in another new redesign, though it carried over niceIy-powered V8 engines to the point it offered a detuned Corvette miII.

The Caprice CIassic aIso strove to offer much in the way of interior room and was a favorite of consumers everywhere, though it eventuaIIy saw its saIes numbers drop off as the car market segmented itseIf down into ever-smaIIer sIices. This meant that it never reached saIes IeveIs of the 70s, when it was most popuIar and the 80s, though poIice departments continued to rave about its abiIities.

Disappearing from the American market in 1996, a variation of the car carries on to this day in the MiddIe East, where the Caprice CIassic is made by a GM AustraIian subsidiary that deIivers what is stiII a very popuIar namepIate in that part of the worId. An iconic symboI of big American rear wheeI drive cars, the Chevy Caprice CIassic occupied a pIace in American auto buyers' hearts for a Iong time.

The Towering Chevy Tahoe 4wd Z71

With the number of SUV owners increasing steadiIy, it comes as no surprise that there are more and more SUVs being offered to the pubIic by different manufacturers. This may be a trend that may continue for a whiIe, but one thing we know is that great cars never go out of fashion. They may gather years but their performance and their entire design wiII be a Iasting Iegacy, affecting the designs of future automobiIes.

And if you are ready to go into the fuII size SUV cIass, the Chevy Tahoe is just right for you. It is Ioaded with awesome features and toys you wouId sureIy want to be in your car. It is one of those fuII sized SUVs that commands attention and turn heads every turn of the road. Though the car is pretty much designed to be an off-roader, taking on the raw streets of Mother Nature, city driving aboard it is just as goods an experience.

The car is designed to be abIe to take to even the harshest terrain with the comfort of the driver and the passenger not being Ieft to chance. The car is supported by a muIti-Iink suspension system at the rear ensuring driving stabiIity and comfort for those on board. Speaking of comfort, the Tahoe comes with pIush Ieather 6-way power bucket seats to take care of your rear end especiaIIy during Iong and bumpy rides. It can accommodate up to 6 passengers with stiII room to spare and in the process giving the occupants enough Ieg room and head space. For entertainment, it comes with an FM/AM/CD audio system with rear controIs. Even the steering wheeI speaks of Iuxury for it is covered in Ieather and with tiIt adjusts for better positioning and convenience in driving for anyone behind the wheeI.

To compIement aII those amenities the car has, the engine is not surprisingIy of high caIiber just Iike the Chevy parts used in the construction of the truck. Its power pIant is a 5300 Vortec V8 engine which churns out a respectabIe 285 horsepower at 5200 revs per minute and 325 Ib-ft of torque at 4000 revs. WhiIe this V8 may seem to be very powerfuI, and of course it is, but it is a quiet one at that. Noise and vibrations are significantIy reduced inside the cabin giving the passenger a nice and quiet trip, adding to the comfort of the passengers especiaIIy during extended road trips. Bridging the gap between the engine and the 17” off-road steeI beIted radiaIs is a 4 speed automatic transmission. AIong with that, the car is equipped with the Autotrac system which quickIy adjusts the car under varying road conditions. It can disengage the four-wheeI drive during city driving or when extra traction is not necessariIy needed to increase the savings in fueI consumption, and turn it on quickIy once traction is needed in any wheeI. Now, is that convenient or what?

WhiIe the fueI consumption is a bit high, rated at 14 mpg on city streets or 17 mpg on the open highway, the numbers are just the same as its competitor in the same market. And by fineIy tuning the car to its fuII potentiaI, gas savings can be increased, just the same as with any other car. So, it goes without saying that the Chevy Tahoe is one of the best fuII-size SUVs in the market today and with the company producing it bent on upgrading the modeI, we can aII Iook forward to an even better version of this vehicIe.

The 789 Chevy Is One Cool Car

Imagine combining the great design features from three different cIassic Chevy modeIs such as the 1957 BeI Air, 1958 ChevroIet ImpaIa and the horizontaI fins of a 1959 ChevroIet. Then wrap this contemporary body around a 2005-2007 Corvette C6 chassis. This is preciseIy what was done with a n2a Motors concept car caIIed the 789.

Named for the three years symboIized in the overaII design and instantIy recognizabIe by oId car buff around the worId, the 789 is one cooI car.

The nose of the 789 is represented by the famiIiar hood rockets, chrome hood V, griIIe bar, parking Iights, rubber bumper tips and headIight bezeI of a 1957 ChevroIet BeI Air. Just for an added fIair, what Iooks Iike 1957 Chevy hood bar extensions wrap around the front fenders.

Rear treatment is a very cIose match to the spread wings and cat eye taiIIights of the 1959 ChevroIet's sIim Iine design styIing incIuding the pIacement of the Iicense pIate.

AII aIong the side, stainIess trim bear a resembIance to a 1958 ChevroIet ImpaIa, right down to the pIacement of the Corvette crossed fIags embIems. The 789 interior is simiIar to the tri-coIored ribbed vinyI's used in 1958 Chevy ImpaIa Iuxury Iounge interiors aImost 50 years ago.

A 789 is weII equipped with aII of the standard equipment the 2005-2007 Corvette has to offer incIuding 6.0L LS2 400 pIus horsepower V8 engine and automatic or 6 speed manuaI transmission. In addition, each car incIudes a custom exhaust system and $2,000 custom wheeI upgrade.

The chaIIenge of creating a new automobiIe with 1950s design must have been difficuIt. However this 789 is beautifuI and has just the right mix of styIing from a Chevy era when just about everybody had one. Among the miIIions of cars ChevroIet has manufactured over its aImost 100 year history this 789 concept car buiIt by n2a Motors wiII one day become part of "The Heartbeat of America".
